ALN

Additional Learning Needs (ALN):

The Welsh Government has reviewed systems around ALN and the mandatory phase will roll out over three years from September 2021 until September 2024.

The new ALN Code is in place.

The ALNET Act is live.

In Rhiwbeina Primary School we use Person Centred Practice in review meetings. One Page Profiles share what we like and admire about pupils and what is going well and, where relevant, Individual Development Plans (IDPs) describe ways we can support their ALN with Additional Learning Provision (ALP). Staff have had regional and LA training opportunities, which remains ongoing.

We believe in early identification of barriers to learning and interventions. We plan for transitions. We collaborate with others to enable pupils with ALN to thrive. We promote inclusive, accessible learning environments to meet the diverse needs of our pupils. Where pupils have English as an Additional Language (EAL) we celebrate this.

We use a range of strategies to assess and help pupils such as Wellcomm, Speech & Language-Links, Rapid Readers and Handwriting Motorway.

Our school ELSA supports the emotional well-being of pupils with individual sessions, using games and social stories. Click the link at the bottom of this page to find out more about ELSA at Rhiwbeina Primary School. We also use the Talkabout intervention and LEGO Therapy to provide structured situations to support pupils to to practise listening to instruction, conversation, shared attention and problem-solving with peers.

We work continually alongside Local Authority specialist teams, the Educational Psychology Service, Outreach and the Health Service.
